This week is a lot, right?Joe Biden and Kamala H This week is a lot, right?Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are in charge of the US, and THAT poem by the amazing Amanda Gorman – brilliant! In the UK torrential rain, storms and snow creating havoc and evacuations – terrible.Five million and counting vaccinated – fantastic!Schools potentially not opening until Easter – not good for a LOT of families.Oh, and life and everything else that has us feeling excited and angry and hopeful and disappointed and many, many other emotions in between. So I have one message to share with you today, and it's the topic of the latest podcast episode 79 and it's to give yourself permission, to allow, whatever it is that you need.Allow yourself your feelings, whatever they are.Allow yourself what you need to feel safe.Allow yourself to do what feels good.Allow yourself to drop the ball.Allow yourself to pick up your prized ball and run with it.Give yourself the permission you need in this moment. And if that feels hard, consider this your permission slip. You can listen to episode 79 of Pressing Pause on your favourite podcast app or through the link in my bio.Image description: Eucalyptus branches in a turquoise vase stood in a corner on a maroon and cream tiled floor and against white walls and skirting boards.

At times I can be heard muttering any one of these At times I can be heard muttering any one of these under my breath! I use affirmations and mantras in my meditations, when I'm standing in a supermarket queue, or whenever I have a wobble. As well as the meaning behind the words, the simple act of repeating a phrase over and over can have a calming effect on our frazzled nerves. Each of these five mantras are connected to a topic we’ve explored in The Calm Mind Club (18 topics so far so 18 mantras) and they’re saved in the Club as images so you can use them as wallpaper on your device or print them out or do what you like with them!Which one of these feels of most use to you today?PS The Calm Mind Club doors are closing on Monday 18 January. Is overwhelm something you can eradicate from your Is overwhelm something you can eradicate from your life? Banish for good so you’re overwhelm-free? Or is it something that you have to just put up with and make do with? Or neither?! In the latest podcast episode I’m talking about our thinking around overwhelm, a way to visualise and gauge how overwhelmed we are and take steps to bring it down. You can find ep78 of Pressing Pause on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and other podcast apps, or listen through the link in my bio. And reminder that The Calm Mind Club – all about helping you to overcome your overwhelm you can feel more calm and in control – is open to join now. Warning: slushy post alert! My dog is 12 today. Be Warning: slushy post alert! My dog is 12 today. Before Georgie came into our lives 12 years-10 weeks ago I had no idea how much love I could have for an animal. She has given us more joy than I could ever have imagined and I’m so thankful for every day with her. Even when she’s being a madam! She’s made the past almost 12 years of our lives infinitely better. And I’m case you’re wondering this is a dog-friendly recipe, not a human cupcake, with carrots, peanut butter and cream cheese topping!Image description: One a wooden kitchen table sits a cupcake on a plate with one lit birthday candle. A guiding word for the year ahead – that’s the A guiding word for the year ahead – that’s the topic of episode 77 of Pressing Pause podcast, released today. I know that some of you may have never heard of choosing a guiding word for the year while others have been doing it for years. It’s something I’ve been doing for quite a while simply because I find it helpful. And I share how in the episode. My word for last year was trust and goodness me it was a goodie! At times I leaned hard on the word and it didn’t let me down. It wasn’t always easy to trust, in myself or the wider world, but it was absolutely the right word for me.In case you’re interested I’ve chosen two words for 2021! I couldn’t choose between them and they work beautifully together and they are:ease and intuitionI explain more about how I came to settle on them and what they mean to me in the podcast but suffice to say I intend to pay even closer attention to my intuition and inner wisdom this year, and to find more ease as I go about daily life. So, to hear more about my guiding words and how you can find your own, listen to episode 77 of Pressing Pause on your favourite podcast app or through the link in my bio.If you’ve chosen a word I’d love to hear about it!Image description: A blue slide with the questions ‘How can I bring more ease into this? What is my intuition telling me?'
I realised that I dived straight into my first pos I realised that I dived straight into my first post of this year without wishing you happy new year (you might see it as an oxymoron anyway)! Or talking about goals or anything else I’ve seen posted. And actually – to do what feels right for me, to honour my values and intuition whatever else others are doing – that’s pretty much my intention for this year.Let me be clear, I’m not saying that I’m going to do whatever I like and to hell with anyone else, god no! And I don’t mean I’m going to shut myself off to what’s happening in the world. That’s not it at all (as in my first post of the year). My intention is to continue turning down the comparison and should noise that gets in the way of doing what you feel is right for you, of what you need or want to do. To listen to my gut even if what it’s saying isn’t what I’m seeing around me, perhaps more so because it’s not what I’m seeing! I talk often about dropping the shoulds and giving ourselves permission because it’s something I’m getting better at but we’re all works in progress right? And also because I know that it’s something so many of you tussle with too. Allowing ourselves to say what we feel, to ask for what we need, to do what we want can feel so incredibly difficult, for so many reasons, but the moments when we’re able to – they’re golden. So, as we tentatively step into this new year – with its uncertainty and scariness – I wish you peace, good health and many, many moments of calm and joy, whatever that looks like, and however that feels like, for you. Image description: A field of sheep with bare trees in the background and a cloudy sky overhead.
A few days ago I was listening to nurses being int A few days ago I was listening to nurses being interviewed on the radio, reading doctor’s tweets, and watching news reports about the NHS getting to breaking point because of Covid, and I could feel the overwhelm rising - this is horrendous, how did we get to this point, it’s heart-breaking, how are the medics coping, the pain, the fear, the exhaustion, it’s all too awful…I’m not in control of government policy, I don’t have any power over what’s happening in hospitals, so what can I do to support the overwhelmed NHS nurses, doctors and staff, apart from continue to abide by the safety guidelines? And then an idea popped into my head: I can make my self-study, online course, Rooted – all about reducing overwhelm and feeling able to cope when life gets stressful – available to NHS staff for free. I didn’t create it with the specific challenges those in the medical world face, it isn’t going to fix the fundamental issues at the heart of the crisis, but it might just help someone working in the NHS to start bringing down the overwhelm and find a little calm. And this is something I can focus on because it IS within my control, even while so much is outside of my power. So, if you work for the NHS and you would like to take my Rooted course for free go to gabrielletreanor.com/courses/rooted-nhs or follow the link in my bio where you can read about it. You’ll just need to give me your NHS email address to get access to the course. Or if you know someone in the NHS please do let them know about this offer, I’d love to support as many people as possible. And if you’re not NHS staff and you’d like to find out about Rooted go to gabrielletreanor.com/courses/rooted or follow the relevant link in my bio. Thanks to Dr Sam @permittedtopause for her insight and perspective.Image description: Slide 1: My hand holding a mug of tea with a piece of card that has the words calm & confident letterpressed onto it. Slide 2: A review of Rooted reading “I enjoyed Rooted and it came at the perfect time as a few days later we went into a sudden full lockdown. I was able to stay a lot calmer than I know I would have done before.
