I’m thrilled to bring you the next in my series of interviews with inspiring women who are living their best life. This doesn’t mean their lives are perfect or that they have it all figured out. Newsflash: no-one does!

Living your best life is all about being the best version of yourself that you can be right now, at this moment. It’s about recognising the good in your life, striving to bring more happiness into the world and making the most of this one, precious life we have.

So, let me get straight on to my conversation with the fabulous, designer maker and shop owner Allison Sadler…

Tell us a bit about yourself, what your life is like and the path you took to get to where you are today.
I’m Allison Sadler, designer maker, shop owner, lifestyle blogger and creative business mentor. I’ve been my own boss for over 25 years now, I started out when I was just 17 (I know I was very keen!) And I really couldn’t be any happier having complete control over how I spend my days. I’m also fortunate enough to run my business with my childhood sweetheart, Mr C. We met way back in the day at Art school, fell in love, got married and here we are now living a lovely creative lifestyle together.

Living creatively and being my own boss is a way of life for me, I never separate the two things as I believe that spending your days doing what you love, should feel less like work and more of a lifestyle choice that comes from the heart. I’m always busy on a mission to make life beautiful and I wouldn’t be happy any other way.

Over the past 25 years my business has grown from humble beginnings stitching at the kitchen table to selling our clothing collection at markets, craft fairs and several independent shops around the country until we finally took the exciting move of opening our own bricks and mortar store called People in Birmingham in June 2000.

Since then my work has evolved and I’ve been grateful for the opportunity to teach through my workshops, speak at events to share my experiences, write editorial for magazines and more recently offer one to one mentoring for creative businesses.

What inspirational quotes or mantras hold meaning for you?
“Create the life you love & do what makes you happy.” I believe passionately that you should give yourself the freedom to live a happy and creative life your way and I’m passionate about promoting this from my work. You only live once so better give it your best shot!

How do you recognise when life’s getting on top of you?
I get grouchy and tired and want to hide underneath the duvet forever!

And what do you do to get back to how you want to feel?
I get back to feeling good by eating all the donuts, drinking cocktails, cuddling my family and, if I’m lucky enough, I’ll completely escape to Cornwall by the sea! Time out is essential for me to clear my head and steady my thoughts.

What are your plans, hopes and dreams for the future?
There’s always so much I want to do. I would love to write a book but writing something worthwhile and meaningful is really important to me so I’m letting that one unfold organically. I’m also making plans behind the scenes to organise a creative retreat for 2017 which is very exciting and a little bit scary in equal measures, I know I need to be super brave and just do it, so watch this space and hold my hand as it happens!

And my hopes and dreams, well, for now I’m really happy enjoying the process of my creative journey and feeling grateful for every opportunity that brings me joy. I count my blessings every day that I can keep on doing what I love and also that I can inspire those around me to do the same.

I so often watch people racing along to achieve more and more, racing ahead to the finish line, but I think it’s important to remember it ain’t over till it’s over, so slow down and take the time to enjoy the ride!

What does living your best life mean to you?
Living your best life means… see all of the above! Embrace who you are completely and give yourself the grace and freedom to live your life your way, no rules, no pressure, just be true to you.

You can connect with Allison in person at her store, People, in Birmingham or visit her online shop. You can also find her on Twitter and on Instagram where she runs #freestylecreativeliving encouraging you to find the freedom to live creatively your way.
